Interview | Kate Roath of Wild Source Apothecary
Bristol based beauty company, Wild Source Apothecary, kindly provided their pink clay mask for the goody bags at our recent event in London in January. Lou Archell caught up with founder, Kate Roath, to discover more about their products and studio.
PLEASE CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT WILD SOURCE APOTHECARY, YOUR STUDIO AND WHERE YOU LIVE.
Wild Source is a small batch Bristol based skincare company. Our focus is on idyllic skincare curated from raw, natural and organic ingredients that are drawn from nature. My aim is to elevate simple skincare routines to more consciously thought out luxury rituals where self care takes a front seat. My studio is based in Montpelier and this is where everything happens from the very beginning stages of recipe building and ingredient testing to bottling, labelling and boxing up our orders!
WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND, HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN INTO NATURAL SKINCARE?
I have always been into skincare, I've not had the best luck with my skin especially growing up. Dry and flakey but inflamed and highly irritable with red blotchy patches and oily patches where I would break out really badly. It's only really been since I swapped the chemical products and switched over to a much simpler, more natural routine that its calmed right down and is much more predictable. It made such a difference that I've never looked back.
What is your daily skin care routine?
It's really simple of the day to day. I do try to make time twice a week for a mask and to give myself some time out to relax but life happens you know..
Every morning I use our Cleansing Oil, It's zingy citrus scent is a good way to perk yourself up and it provides an extra barrier of moisture which my skin is really craving at the moment! I use Wild Flower Facial Tonic to seal the moisture and the apply a couple of drops of Miracle Oil. In the evenings I tend to double cleanse. I use Night Nectar and an intensive eye serum we've recently developed. I tend to use Radiance Mask on a Sunday evening. It's become part of my Sunday ritual and helps me to prepare my skin for the week ahead! And if I get time I'll use our Detox Mask for a midweek treat if I get time too!
HOW DID YOUR BUSINESS START? CAN YOU TELL US THE ROOTS OF WILD SOURCE?
After switching over to natural products I started making my own skincare. I loved blending my own oils and homemade skincare. I started by foraging Rosehips on my way to work and going home and pressing them into homemade Rosehip Oil. I loved watching the process from start to end and that's where it all started really. I decided I wanted to learn how to do it professionally. I started reading lots of natural skincare books and was introduced further to the power of essential oils and their incredible uses. I applied for Aromatherapy school and learnt the art of blending essential oils into skincare. That's where Wild Source began...
YOUR PINK CLAY MASK WAS IN OUR GOODY BAG IN JANUARY, CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THAT PRODUCT?
I chose Radiance Mask for your goody bags because its a really nice introduction to clay based skincare. Its a beautifying blend of Pink and Kaolin clay with ground Rosehips & Elderberry and it works with all skin types. Clay is extremely gentle yet effective way of calming inflammation and soaking up excess oils. It's a little different to a regular mask as it comes in powder form which you then blend but it means you can tailor what you mix it with to what your skin is craving. Herbal tea works really nicely as does a nice hydrating toner. It leaves your skin beautifully bright, and so soft. The addition of super fine ground Elderberry and Rosehips leave your skin feeling baby soft as they exfoliate your complexion too. I couldn't of named it anything other than Radiance Mask.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST HURDLE IN SETTING UP YOUR BUSINESS, AND CAN YOU GIVE OUR SISTERS SOME ADVICE?
Expect the unexpected! Setting up Wild Source has been the hardest but most rewarding thing I think I've ever done. Don't rush would be my advice and stay authentic. Its really easy to compare your ideas and business to others that are already well established and doing really well. I have to remind myself daily that it isn't a race and that my business would grow organically. You can achieve anything if you really want it but nothing happens over night.
What are you ambitions for the brand?
Wild Source will always stay true to its roots, organic, vegan and honestly made skincare. But I want to grow to a wider market, I really believe that especially now in 2018 more and more of us are turning to a more 'green' and honest approach when it comes to skincare which is fantastic. I want to be apart of that. I'd love to see us start stocking in some larger department stores so that our products could be more easily available to customers. To be sat on the shelves next to Sunday Riley or Herbivore that would be pretty special!
Are you developing any new products this year?
We're constantly developing new products! We've just signed off the Detox Collection which is due to launch in April and we're really excited about that. We have our year planned out to launch skincare on a seasonal basis, because your routines change with the seasons and we appreciate its important to keep up with that. I don't want to give too much away- but there's a lot of exciting stuff coming this year for us!
Where can we buy your products?
Our online site currently is the best place to buy our products. A lot of our South West stockists are waiting for our Detox Collection to launch in April as we'll have exciting new packaging to debut too. But as soon as that's ready we'll be restocking everyone! 19 in Clevedon does still have some of our stock though and its an absolutely beautiful shop if you're in Bristol its a must see. Also Blown in Southampton stocks our full range and also is the best place to get your hair done in Southampton hands down!
And of course on our website: wildsource.co.uk. This Easter weekend we are having a 20% off everything in our online store. So be sure to pop in on Friday to grab some goodies.
